It may be one of the most common questions every social media influencer asks themself – when and how many times should I post?
I’m going to share with you what I have found to be the best tempo for posting on each social media channel. However, how frequently YOU should post may depend on how involved your viewers are and what objective you are trying to attain while posting. More on this later.
Instagram:
As per experts and seasoned social media people, the recommended number of times you should post on Instagram is 1-3 times a day! It may feel like a bunch of additional to do in your daily routine, but (to make it easy) you can mix it up by posting in either Feed or Stories.
Consistency counts. Avoid not posting for a month or just posting once a month at a time and then expect the same views or clicks you had before.
YouTube:
Releasing one video a week is the unwritten rule for YouTube. If you want to post more than once a week, (to make it easy) join the YouTube Shorts foray. That’s additional uploads to your channel. And if you are just starting out on YouTube it adds up to your watch hours leading up to your monetization and it also caters to people with a very short attention span.
Some content takes days or weeks to produce (this so true), so releasing videos on a daily basis isn’t realistic for every type of content.
Based on my YouTube experience, you’ll grow your channel faster if you:
Select a posting date and stick with it (make sure it’s the most effective time and day in your region)
Post your upload schedule on your YouTube account (so that your viewers will know when to watch your videos)
Don’t commit to a date if you can’t do it! Creating YouTube videos takes time. (I rather have quality videos versus quantity, so I do mine once a week)
Bank YouTube videos so you have them ready to upload on your schedule. (This is what I do most of the time. I shoot three topics in one day and edit and schedule it in YT.)
Facebook:
Ideally, you should post on Facebook 3 times a week. DON’T put 3 posts in one day. There’s a recent study conducted by Hubspot in which they saw that there is a drop in engagement whenever you post to much in one day. It’s always best to post something not about you. What do I mean? For example, in my social media strategy, from time to time, I post statistics or data related to Internet usage or about social media or about apps, that are helpful to my target audience and also to the general public. I also post something amazing that is not related to me for edutainment purposes.
Twitter:
Twitter is known for politics and social awareness. But lately, Twitter transformed itself and became more flexible with regards to posting and such. Twitter is like post-all-you-can social media. Post to Twitter 3 to 30 times a day. Tweets have an incredibly short shelf life, so it’s important to spread your tweets throughout the day to maximize your reach.
TikTok:
We all know that TikTok is pure entertainment (like too much dancing and comedy) and less know for other stuff - like a how-to or other non-entertainment programs. Post on TikTok once or twice per day, and no more than 5 times. Quality is far more critical than quantity on TikTok. The videos may be short, but they must be worth watching. However, TikTok now is contemplating increasing their video post watch time or video recordings up to three (3) minutes. Let’s see what happens next year, especially now that Trump is no longer in office.
LinkedIn:
LinkedIn has a different ecosystem compared to the rest. In this channel, your audiences are college or university graduates, corporate people, and business-minded persons. In my social media strategy (for my region), I find LinkedIn to be important for me because they are part of my target audience. But you have to treat it as a separate social media platform and don’t just post and post anything (which was my rookie mistake). Here you need to have your message catered and crafted to corporate and business people. Here you can write your own article or newsletter (like Substack.com) and also post original videos (don’t repurpose your YouTube videos here) for LinkedIn. Post on LinkedIn once or twice per day, and no more than 5 times.
Tumblr:
Tumblr used to be as popular as the current social media channels of today. I’m not giving up on Tumblr. There is still an audience on Tumblr. In fact, they have an internal Blog feature and that you can maximize to your advantage. In Tumblr, you can do the same stuff as the other social media platforms. Post at least once or twice a day here and you can repurpose your blogs here as well.
MeWe:
The Anti-Facebook, MeWe. The Facebook alternative. So if you don’t want to be tracked and spied upon then MeWe is the place to be. Here you have millions of users already since the day it was established. In MeWe, just become a member of a group or you make also your own group and you can post your links in these groups. You can post on multiple groups anytime. So include this in your to-do list when doing your social media marketing. Post here at least once a week.
Algos are Everchanging:
An Algorithm is like the brain behind a social platform. They are made by human software developers and is very dynamic. This is why it is important to keep an eye on recent news or updates from your social media platforms and take note on things that aren’t working as well as it was before. Chances are there were changes in the algorithm which may affect things like how engagement is weighted, or how easy or hard it is to reach your target audience. Usually, you can find a lot of articles or videos about when these algorithms change, so you can make your move when you need to.
Straight Talk:
Start with best practices in mind, but ultimately the BEST time to post is specific to your region or to your target audience. Try posting or uploading on different days and at various times and check your free analytics in your platform to understand clearly what works best for you. You may also choose to use a free slash paid social media management app like CinchShare which helps you manage your posts and schedule them based on your preferences. Please also note that your best posting times may differ from platform to platform. Eventually, you’ll build a consistent weekly posting schedule you can follow and check in from time to time if you start to see engagement fall.
